The Play will be initially offered on Orange, a “well placed” industry source told website Mobile this week. If the Xperia Play is, as many observers expect, launched at Mobile World Congress next month, you can bet all of the UK’s operators will be request for a slice of the action.

Of course, there’s nothing in the brief comment from the mole to indicate whether EE has an exclusive, simply that it will be offering the gaming phone.

Release Date
The Verizon iPhone topic has been up for debate for years now, and hints about it coming in 2011 have been really strong. Recently Skype posted a document on their website which detailed the video calling feature that iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad users will get later in 2011. The recent file released by Skype featured the Verizon logo which was the reason for the hot news.

Economical iPad
Through the Thanksgiving break Apple’s well-liked tablet device, the iPad was offered with a price cutback. Now while this was only a small motion, the follow on from this has been with Apple seemingly allowing one retailer to knock 25-percent off its iPhone 4 with less than 6 months of production under its belt. The same retailer has also been selling the old iPhone 3GS at over 50-percent discount.

The Nokia X6 seems to have come in for a little care and attention as the Nokia X6 firmware update version 30.0.003 is now hitting around the world. Along with solving a number of stability issues, the update also brings with it the latest array of Nokia apps.

The Nokia X6 comes failing three different flavors from the entry-level 8GB version to the mid-range 16GB model to the all-singing 32GB struggle with the latest Music/Ovi Music Unlimited.

Along with delivering greater steadiness, you’ll find that all the essential Nokia apps have been updated to their latest edition. So, Ovi Store has even the Nokia Web Browser have come in for a bit of freshness.

If your Nokia X6 firmware update version 30.0.003 hasn’t turned up yet then keep checking back as firmware updates even out by build number and not territory, as a lot of people tend to believe, so keeping an eye on the updater is the best way to stay on top.

It’s great to see that Nokia isn’t supporting just its latest devices but by adding benefits to their older smartphones, the Nokia X6 is over a year old now, you can continue to get true worth from your purchase.

Nokia’s tipped tablet plans this morning, with arch insider Eldar Murtazin claiming that the future of the odd schedule is unclear after operators apparently balked at the pricing. Confirmed detail about the tablet is limited, though a listing for the Nokia Z500 was spotted in the Ovi Store earlier this month.

As for hardware, we’ve seen talk of a 7- or 9-inch touchscreen and Foxconn tipped as the OEM. Previous rumors show Nokia was effective on a “large screen” device with OpenGL ES 2.0 support for gaming. OS is likely to be MeeGo, of course. Murtazin also claims that Samsung will be mostly shifting to Android 3.0 for their tablet plans, which comes as little surprise.

The LG Vortex has a slim and simple design with a good touch-screen display. Features include GPS, EV-DO Rev.

Wi-Fi with 3G Mobile Hotspot capabilities, a 3.2-megapixel camera, stereo Bluetooth, and it ships with Android 2.2.

It’s as fast as higher-end smartphones, and the camera has neither LED flash or HD video capture. The price is not as competitive as other similar handsets. You can’t uninstall preloaded apps and services. The LG Vortex is a wonderful entry-level Android smartphone for Verizon Wireless as long as you know its limits.

Analysis: If the LG Vortex looks familiar to you, that’s because it’s essentially Verizon’s version of the LG Optimus T from T-Mobile and the LG Optimus S from Sprint. It has many of the same specifications it’s owed as an entry-level Android smartphone and it ships with Android 2.2, Wi-Fi, GPS, a 3.2-megapixel camera, EV-DO, and it can act as a 3G mobile hotspot.

As we mentioned the LG Vortex looks very similar to the LG Optimus handsets, exclusively the LG Optimus T. It’s cover in a soft touch plastic coating and has rounded corners for an easy feel in the hand. The LG Vortex ships with Android 2.2, which is the latest Android firmware as of the Vortex’s launch date.

The 3.2-megapixel camera on the Vortex can take pictures in five different resolutions and three picture quality settings. Call quality was good, but not great. The LG Vortex has a 600 MHz processor, which may be far than the modern 1 GHz processors on higher-end smartphones, but we found it suitable for our needs.

Sony Ericsson’s plans to come back to Microsoft with Windows Phone 7 may have had some early leaks ahead of launch in a video. The Xperia X7 would lead the group and would allegedly be one of the first WP7 devices with a faster processor. It would reportedly run a dual-core 1.2GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon MSM8260. They would use a larger 4.3-inch (though 480×800) screen to match.

The flagship would also tout an 8.1-megapixel camera and HDMI video output. Although smaller the Xperia X7 mini may be the most unique. It would rely on a single-core 1GHz QSD8250 and a 3.5-inch screen, but it could make up for the speed and display with a 10.1-megapixel camera with a rare 3X optical zoom.

Both phones could be ready by early 2011, which would line up both Sony Ericsson’s general 2011 ambitions and with the Mobile World Congress expo in February. The rumor is as yet unverified and may be called somewhat into question by the processors; Microsoft currently requires the same early 2010 Snapdragon on current WP7 devices because of its limited driver support. Expansion to CDMA confirmed for early next year may suggest that Microsoft is expanding driver support for newer processors at the same time.

The Blackberry Pearl 9100 3G smartphone has reached New Zealand after being picked up by Vodafone, with a likely appeal for those who want a compact, candybar device that doesn’t compromise on functionality.

As you’d expect from the manufacturer Research in Motion, it is a sleek and well-built phone with a no-frills operating system designed for efficiency and productivity.

This model apart from other Blackberry’s is that it is the smallest produced at 108 x 50 x 13.3 mm and weighs 94 grams. It has a full QWERTY keyboard, but the Pearl 9100 employs the SureType version. The glossy black device is comfortable to hold, thanks to the smooth metal rear that houses the 3.2MP camera with LED flash, while the look is chic with rubber and dark-chrome accents.

Applications can be accessed by pressing the Blackberry key next to the trackpad, while media touch controls are on the top of the phone. There is also a 3.5 inch headphone jack and a microSD slot for cards of up to 2GB.

The Pearl 9100 performs well, running on a 624 MHz processor. This model uses Blackberry’s latest operating system – version 5. It offers a full suite of connectivity options, including 3G GSM networking, GPRS, HSDPA, Wi-fi, and Bluetooth.

Battery life is more than adequate – RIM rates the device for five and a half hours of 3G talk time or 13 days standby in 3G mode. Call quality was always clear on this phone.
